Facebook has announced an update to the way that Newsfeed works, with the aim of showing users the stories that are most relevant to them. To put it simply, and in Facebook’s own words, Friends and Family come first.

It has sent the media into a bit of a spin but, before I go on, I want to urge you to stay calm and avoid knee-jerk reactions.

When updates, such as this one, are announced people often panic that all the hard work they’ve put into building their Facebook Page is going to go up in flames. In fact, a knee-jerk reaction and sudden change in your strategy could do more harm than good.

When it comes to algorithm changes, we never know quite what the impact is going to be. However, chances are that it could affect your Facebook Page, as Facebook has said:

“Overall, we anticipate that this update may cause reach and referral traffic to decline for some Pages. The specific impact on your Page’s distribution and other metrics may vary depending on the composition of your audience.”

Rather than rushing over to your personal profile to promote your business (just in case you’re thinking of it, bear in mind that Facebook can shut your account down altogether for doing this) or piling loads of money into Facebook ads, take some time to review your current Facebook strategy and make sure you’re getting the basics right. Then focus your efforts on publishing high-quality content that your fans engage with and want to continue seeing in their Newsfeed.
